Welcome to Mrs. Job’s First Grade Classroom! We have wonderful experiences ahead of us.
Let me take a minute to introduce myself. My name is Amy Job and I graduated from Concord College in West Virginia in 1995. I received my Masters in Classroom Education from the University of Rio Grande in Ohio in 2004. I taught 4 years in Ohio before moving to Raleigh 2003. I have a little girl named Kendra in 6th grade and a son named Jeffrey in 3rd grade. My husband’s name is also Jeffrey. Mrs. Bynum is my assistant and a vital part of the classroom. Mrs. Bynum is warm, friendly, loving, calm, and very capable.
Philosophy - I am a strong believer in learning using a variety of resources. We have many activities planned where the children work at an individual pace. We will work in small groups, large group, and individually. My overall goal of the year is to develop strong, confident readers and writers, as well as good problem solvers.
The best way we can help your child succeed is to maintain good communication between home and school. If there is any information we may need to know, please talk with us. It is especially important we are made aware of any allergies, health problems, cultural or religious beliefs, family stress, ect.
Transportation - Your child will continue to return home the way he or she left today, unless we receive a signed note from you. We CANNOT take your child’s word for it!
Discipline Philosophy - We speak with the children the first few days of school regarding our expectations in and out of the classroom. We are firm but not rigid. When directions are followed, the children are rewarded with praise, hugs, stickers, jellybeans, etc . . . When they aren’t following directions, they may be asked to sit at their table while others are on the carpet. They also may need to be removed from the group entirely. We don’t believe in children missing play period because the ones that we have to speak to the most are usually the ones that need the exercise doing some We will contact a parent if we feel the need but it is not a daily practice. We send a daily folder with your child’s conduct and may need to make a comment or suggestion for parents. There is a place for your comments as well. We seldom send any child to the office. If we do, it is for a SERIOUS offense. Otherwise, we handle discipline problems ourselves. They know when they are doing things that are acceptable by our feedback regularly. Remember . . . It’s normal to “test the water” at first. Your child may come home feeling we are “meanies” the first few weeks. Be patient! It’s easier to start out firm and loosen up gradually. We promise they will soon relax and we will have the best year ever.
Snacks - We will have a snack every day. Please send a snack for your child everyday. We ask as a school that you send something nutritious, and avoid brightly colored fruit juices, as it leaves stains. We have a water fountain in the room, and bottled water is always a good alternative to juice. Please try to remember to send a snack each day. It is hard to watch others eat when your little tummy is growling.
Bookbags - Your child will need a bookbag to transport things back and forth. We will send home a folder everyday that needs to be signed and returned the next day. These folders are a very important part of our home to school communication. Please check your child’s bag everyday for any important forms or letters, especially the first couple weeks.
Our schedule is as follows:
Lunch – 11:45 – 12:15
Monday – Art
Tuesday – Music
Wednesday – Computer Lab
Thursday – P.E.
Friday - Media
Media circulation will also be incorporated into our centers so children can check books out more than once.
Homework – Homework is sent home every Monday. Please have your child complete their homework each night and return the next day. Students should read every night and record their books on the reading log provided in their red daily folders. Spelling notebooks are sent home on Monday and Wednesday.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
