FROM THE HART NEWSLETTER
 MAY 2007

Congratulations to Mrs. Fletcher and the second and third grade classes for a wonderful music performance on April 24th.  We are very proud of their hard work!

The River Bend Elementary School PTA general membership meeting was held prior to the April 24th musical performance.  We wish to congratulate the following PTA members who were elected to the Executive Board for the 2007-2008 school year:

River Bend Elementary School yearbooks were sent home during the week of April 16th.
Since all yearbooks look the same and our instructional time is very valuable, we ask that students leave their yearbooks at home to help avoid disruptions during the school day.

Student supply lists for the 2007-2008 school year have been posted under the “What’s New?” section on our school’s website (http://riverbendes.wcpss.net/).  Lists have been distributed to area stores that carry school supplies including Target, Staples and Wal-Mart and are also available in the main office.

Parents are reminded that the last day of school for Track 1 students is Wednesday, June 6, 2007 and the last day of school for Tracks 2, 3 and 4 students is Friday, June 29, 2007. The first day for Tracks 1, 2 and 3 students for the 2007-2008 school year is Monday, July 9, 2007 and the first day of school for Track 4 students is Monday, July 30, 2007. 

The address for construction updates for our permanent “brick and mortar” school has changed.  Parents can now find new information and read about the progress of the school on the internet at http://www.wcpss.net/facilities/schools/elementary/river_bend_e.html.

Kindergarten orientation for incoming 2007-2008 kindergarten students will be held on Thursday, May 10, 2007 at 6:00 PM in the River Bend Elementary School cafeteria.  The purpose of this meeting is to provide parents with an opportunity to gain knowledge about the instructional program at the kindergarten grade level and to provide essential information regarding the staggered entry process, the school calendar, school transportation, child nutrition services and more.  We look forward to seeing you there!

 This is a reminder that students should not bring toys, games or electronic devices to school.  Related school policies are outlined in the River Bend Elementary School student handbook.

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 7-11.  Please review the schedule of events that was recently provided by the PTA.  We thank you for your support of our outstanding staff members at River Bend and appreciate your sending in food items for the May 9th staff appreciation luncheon.

Field Day for Tracks 1 and 2 students is scheduled for Friday, May 4.  Field Day for Tracks 3 & 4 students will be held on Friday, May 11.  Parents are invited to attend Field Day and are asked to ensure that their children dress appropriately for playing outside.  Students should wear safe and comfortable shoes and should refrain from wearing bathing suits.

As a reminder, students may not wear hats, halter or strapless tops or tops with spaghetti straps to school.  Students are prohibited from wearing sagging pants and any clothing that is excessively tight or short as well.  Any garments that are disruptive, provocative or revealing (including those that expose the back or midriff) are prohibited as well.  Please review the dress code policy outlined in our student handbook with your children.

In compliance with WCPSS hot weather guidelines, recess will be held indoors when the temperature exceeds 90 degrees.  Alternate appropriate activities will be scheduled for students in classrooms.

Phi Delta Kappa will conduct a district-wide Curriculum Management Audit during the week of May 7-11, 2007 to provide WCPSS with information that will be used to continuously improve the quality of our overall instructional programs.  The audit will include interviews with parents and members of the general public which will be 15 minutes in length and held on Wednesday, May 9th from 4:30 until 6:30 PM at Carroll Middle School and the WCPSS training facility in Cary.  Interviews will be scheduled on a first come, first serve basis.   Parents wishing to schedule a time to share their thoughts on our curriculum are encouraged to register between May 1st and 4th at www.wcpss.net or by calling our customer service department 850-1600 during business hours.

End-of-Grade testing for Track 1 students will be conducted from Tuesday, May 15 through Friday, May 18.  WCPSS Child Nutrition Services will provide free breakfast for all Track 1 students on May 16th and 17th and breakfast at regular cost on May 15th and 18th.  Parents should send their children to school ready for testing and are encouraged to ensure that their children get plenty of rest.

Mrs. Sonya Bynum, River Bend Elementary School Teacher Assistant of the Year, will be honored at a district-wide banquet on Monday, May 14, 2007.  Mr. Ben Cline, River Bend Elementary School Teacher of the Year, will be honored at a district-wide banquet on Thursday, May 17, 2007.  We would like to congratulate Mrs. Bynum and Mr. Cline!

School will be closed on Monday May 28, 2007 in observance of Memorial Day.
